"Magician’s Assistant", by Ken

The two most important things to Vera were Richard’s success and my success.

I’d like to tell you a story to illustrate that.

As some of you know, Vera and I had a stage act called “Magic by Dr. Ken”.  What you might not know is that Vera was a member of both the IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians) and the SAM (Society of American Magicians).

Many times our opening act started with me showing an empty box.  Then, out of the box I produced a large silk, which I handed to Vera.  Then, I produced a 2nd and 3rd silk that I handed to Vera.  Sometimes we had as many as 40 silks draped over her arm.

Then, I reached under the silks and brought out a live rabbit.  The audience would go wild with applause.

But, what was really going on here?  All I did was reach under, release the harness and catch the rabbit. How did the rabbit get there?  Vera had to get the live rabbit and hide it under the silks while up to 200 people watched, without anyone seeing her.  That was magic!

For her to get what she wanted, which was my success, she had to be invisible.  If anyone noticed her, we both failed.   I got the applause that I wanted; but she did all the work.
